"Full of joy, they are bringing the Good News"

This is the text, the theme that our three sisters Bernadette, Elodie and Georgette selected for their first commitment in the congregation. We let ourselves be carried away with this joyful enthusiasm. Leaving from Gumo / Ghana, Bamako / Mali and Ouagadougou we all arrived in Bobo on the afternoon of February 12. Shouts of joy rang out from all sides. The families of our sisters Elodie and Georgette were also happy to be with us. Bravo to our novitiate sisters who welcomed us with good food and nice rooms.

In the courtyard of the community, the festive atmosphere was also visible with the tents set up, a lovely panel with the logo of our sisters (beautifully arranged by artists from the Aferdita home and Sr. Nicole Hebert).  A little later in the evening we were all very busy here and there to lend a hand to the final arrangements.
At 6.30 pm, we gathered in the large community room for a prayer of thanksgiving for our three future young professed sisters and our jubilarian Sr. Nicole. Then we gathered together once again for another good meal in the dining room.

After the invited guests went off to bed, some of us continued working into the night to polish the final arrangements. Against all odds, the rain also added to the joy of our celebration. Indeed in the early morning of February 13, a blessing poured down from heaven, just enough not to wet the decorations but very refreshing in this early hot season. At 8 am, the guests began to arrive. The members of the international novitiate who had spent many hours preparing the hymns started off to meet our two novices, Germaine and Therese.

Finally, at 9 o'clock, twelve priests, all the MSOLA, the novices, postulants and parents of our sisters began a beautiful procession toward the altar. There could not have been a better hymn to accompany us than this:  "Rejoice for your king; ... God's people dance for joy ..."

Our sister Nicole gave the introduction to the celebration but out of modesty she failed to emphasize her own jubilee celebration. Fortunately, the main celebrant, Father Jacques Charon, took the time to link Nicole's 50-year jubilee of religious life and missionary journey to the first commitment of our young sisters. He pointed out what a blessing this was for Nicole who had worked in both countries of origin of our sisters from Burkina Faso and Chad. The look of happiness was so great on the face of our sister Nicole.

The celebration then followed its normal course with Father Jacques' beautiful and challenging homily. During the actual ceremony of vows, each in turn had a dialogue with Sr. Gisela Harth (delegated by the Superior General for the occasion) and recited her vow-formula.  It was a very solemn moment.

Then they received the cross "a sign of their belonging to the congregation and their desire to follow Christ obedient."  Some people were very excited, anticipating the joy of embracing the young sisters and were already beginning to wiggle in their places. After the last of the three had received the cross, we all danced up in single file to congratulate the newly professed sisters.
After communion, we could read on many faces their impatience to know the new mission assignment of the sisters. Sr. Gisela satisfied our curiosity by rising with three small flags in her hands. She gave Georgette the flag of Ghana where she is appointed to Gumo community. The sisters of this community welcomed her with shouts of joy and dancing. Bernadette was appointed to the community of Ghardaia.  She received the Algerian flag and was joyfully greeted by a sister who had been on mission in Algeria. Finally our sister Elodie was thrown into the air by the large group of Congolese sisters and novices who were present. She was appointed to Bukavu and received the flag of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nothing could restrain the expression of our joy, to the rhythm of the songs sung by the choir.  Those who wished could dance. Many people did.

The young professed sisters expressed their gratitude to the entire congregation, their joy at now being a member of the MSOLA family and their need of our support and prayers.
Then it was Nicole's turn.  She gave us a glowing account of her missionary experience. She told us how a crystal vase received from her father, had inspired her prayer and the desire of her whole life: to become a crystal that reflects Christ for others. This is what she tried to be in Algeria, in Deli Chad, in Bobo, in Nouna, Burkina Faso.  Bobo received the prize because this is where she lived and worked for 24 years.  It is therefore not surprising that our sister ended her talk by calling on young women from Bobo to one day join the congregation. Hopefully the call did not fall on deaf ears.

At the end of the celebration, everyone was invited to share the meal prepared for the occasion. Seats previously arranged for the mass were re-distributed for the feast.
The party continued late into the afternoon with the animation of the master of ceremonies and various dances.
In the evening there was a prayer of thanksgiving in the chapel and supper in the courtyard.  This was followed by a ceremony of gift-giving among the family. There again, despite the fatigue, the joy was still tangible.

Unfortunately, in our lives happy and sorrowful events often coincide. The Lord had chosen that morning to take to himself the mother of our sister Jeanne d'Arc Ouattara.  We finished the evening in a prayer for the repose of her soul. In a certain way she too shared our same mission at the service of Africa and now she intercedes for us. May she rest in peace.

Many good wishes to our jubilarian and our three newly professed sisters!

Sr. Valerie Kabore Sibdou, Ouagadougou

“I have said to the God of all, I am all yours“

The day dawned, bright and clear, as a promise that this was indeed a special day to be lived in joy and happiness. On Saturday 21st of March, Linah Siabana, Vickness Muleya  Nangogo (Zambians), Malgorzata (Gosia) Poplawska (Polish), Lucy Nabweteme (Ugandan) and Birgitta Gremm (German), made their first Profession and joined our Msola family.

The novices themselves had worked hard to prepare the program and songs. Appropriate songs were chosen in all the languages of our five novices, as well as English and Swahili. We had chosen the texts for the liturgy of the feast of the Annunciation. As there were a large number of guests, we had chosen to have the celebration outside, using our veranda for the place of the altar, with tents shading the guests who faced the altar. The background had been beautifully decorated in blue and white colours with the outline of the continent of Africa as background. Lovely floral arrangements completed the decoration.

We were blessed to have Sr. Helene Mbuyamba among us for this occasion, she received the first vows of our sisters in the name of Sr. Piluca, our superior general. Our main celebrant was Fr. Erasto Shayo, M. Afr. and at least 8 others of our priest friends con-celebrated, including our Parish Priest. We were especially grateful that the Missionary of Africa Philosophy students were present to re-enforce our choir and celebrate this event with us. The singing was indeed beautiful thanks to them.

The ceremony began with an entrance procession. After the penitential rite came the ceremony of Light, where Sr. Helene called each one to come forward and presented her with a lighted candle, lit from the pascal candle, and invited each to “ walk in the Light of Christ.” The refrain  “ let your light shine for all the world to see,…and give your Father praise,” helped confirm this invitation.

The Bible procession was very colourful with some of the M. Afr. students dancing, carrying shield and spear, preceeding the Bible carried by Sr. Maite. After the homily there was a short dialogue between Sr. Helene and the five novices, asking them if they were ready to commit themselves to follow Christ totally, dedicating their lives to the evangelization of the African peoples, and live in an international apostolic community. Their response given, each one in turn then pronounced her vows, kneeling, with hand on the Bible. Sr. Harriet Kabaije then renewed her vows for another year. All sisters then signed their formula of Profession at the altar.
This was then followed by the blessing of the crosses and the giving of the cross to each newly professed sister, as sign of her choosing to follow Christ, and of her belonging to our institute. This was the moment of joyful “vigelegele” and congratulations by all of us Msola present.
With the joyful singing of the offertory procession, gifts of the fruit and vegetables of our garden (work of the hands of the novices) were brought up, together with the pictures of Mother Salome, Cardinal Lavigerie and the Pelican emblem.

After communion came the “Sending on Mission”.  In the name of Sr. Pilcua, Sr. Helene announced officially where each one is being sent. The new sister pinned the name of the country on the map of Africa which was in the background. The five new sisters, together with Sr. Harriet then danced the Magnificat.

After a word of thanks, given by one of the newly professed, (Birgitta) we sang the Sancta Maria and received the final blessing. The recessional song then invited us all to dancing and clapping to the words of the song,  “I danced in the morning”. All guest happily joined in this. The day continued with a festive meal, entertainment and rejoicing. We ended, among ourselves, with a prayer of Praise and Thanksgiving in the evening and more rejoicing together.

We appreciated the presence of our sisters from Daressalaam who joined us for the celebration. They came with five young women, candidates, who were doing a “live-in”. They later expressed that it was quite a remarkable experience for them.

We continue to give thanks to God for His marvels in each one of us and in all who respond generously to His love.  Here also follows a short testimony from our newly professed sisters:

“ The night before our profession I became afraid of being in front of so many people to pronounce my vows. Early in the morning, I offered my fear to the Lord, asked for courage. Before mass started, I was so excited and I received the grace of Joy throughout the day. Pressing my hand on the Bible while making my vows was reminding me that Jesus is with me. I got strength from being with my four companions and from the  prayers of very many people. It was a very wonderful feast. May we be able to carry Christ to others as we were invited in the homily. Thanks be to God and to all of you.
Lucy Nabweteme.

“My heart was filled with gratitude to the Lord.  In the morning just before the whole celebration, I saw how many good things had been happening around me/us during the last days, weeks, months, but also so many things (much earlier) which were bringing me to this moment. So many signs of unity, love, support from the people around us and from far away. The deep awareness (which taught me a very simple lesson) that we are walking on this journey all together, carrying each other.”
Gosia Poplawska.

“On the day of our First Profession, I had many different thoughts and feelings in my heart.
First of all, I felt a deep gratitude towards God for all what I have lived in the novitiate. Early in the morning, before the feast there was also a feeling of excitement for all what was to come during the celebration. The celebration was a very joyful one. The moment when I received my cross from Sr. Helene, I will not forget ! Yes, my heart was filled with gratitude and joy throughout the whole day. To feel the joy of all our sisters and guests was great and showed me their love for all of us.

Birgitta Gremm

"The day was a day of thanksgiving and experiencing God's love and mercy. His love was manifested in us, making the vows and becoming witnesses to His love in His Mission. For me, this day made me realize more and more God's Faithfulness to His promises made to us His children."
Linah Siabana

"My heart was filled with joy and thanksgiving in gratitude to the God of Love. I experienced the mercy of God on this BIG DAY! I didn't know what to do or how to be, in a way I could not believe it and yet it was REAL! The reality and my being very much present, reminded me of a bible text. "I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full." It was indeed for me a day of hope and courage for both Zambia and Msola as a whole. My belief is that Jesus came to reconcile the whole creation to God, yes and it became Real..." I will give you a sign" ...the prophet Isiah said... and this is how I lived that Blessed Day"
Vickness Nangogo Muleya
