“Caritas” et le pélican

Lavigerie, un apôtre de la charité :

En devenant évêque, l’abbé Lavigerie prend pour devise “CARiTAS” et comme blason épiscopal, un pélican, cet oiseau qui nourrit ses petits de son propre sang !

Sa vie illustre la devise et le blason qu’il s’est choisis. En arrivant à Alger, il s’adresse aux Algériens musulmans : « Je réclame le privilège de vous aimer comme des fils… » A l’évêché, il accueille des orphelins, et fonde ses deux sociétés missionnaires pour leur venir en aide – en 1868 les Missionnaires d’Afrique (Pères Blancs) et en 1869 les Soeurs Missionnaires de Notre Dame d’Afrique (Soeurs Blanches) – . Il exige de leurs membres la même compassion qu’il a lui-même envers les Africains : « pour que notre charité porte des fruits, il faut que nous voyions Notre Seigneur lui-même dans la personne des malades que nous soignons et que notre charité et notre patience les frappent. »lavigerie pelican caritas rome

Mère Marie Salomé et la charité :

Notre premère supérieure génrale, Mère Marie Salomé, invite les soeurs à vivre “cette charité dans son double objet : Dieu et le prochain,
je voudrais la voir devenir, pour ainsi dire, la passion de notre vie apostolique, et s’emparer de tout en nous, de nos pensées, de nos désirs, de notre cœur surtout, pour les tourner vers cette seule aspiration : aimer Dieu et le prochain…”
