Jubilee closing celebrations in Uganda
The jubilee year of 150 years of existence of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) and the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (White Sisters) was opened in December 2018 in Tunisia, Northern Africa where our institutes were founded. Celebrations ending this Jubilee will be in Uganda from 5th to 8th December 2019.
Four days’ activities have been planned including a pilgrimage in the footsteps of the pioneer missionaries that the members of the two institutes will make.
The first day we will visit Kiggungu, Kisubi, Nalukolongo and Lubaga and conclude the day with the Eucharist at Lubaga Cathedral.
On the 6th of December, we will go for a pilgrimage to Masaka (Bukalasa, Katigondo, Villa-Maria and Bwanda).
The third day of the pilgrimage we will go to Munyonyo Uganda Martyrs’ Shrine and Mapeera – Nabulagala the cradle and ancestral home of the Catholic church in Uganda.
The climax celebration will be on Sunday 8th December, Feast of Mary Immaculate, at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. The place is so meaningful in the history of our two institutes. The Uganda Martyrs were not only evangelized by the White Fathers but the latter stood with them up to the last minute, encouraging them not to reject their religion. On the side of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa, the miracle of the healing of their two sisters, Sr. Marie Aloyse Criblet and Sr. Richildis Buck from the plague through the intercession of the Uganda Martyrs greatly contributed to their canonisation in 1964.
