From our Sr Zawadi Barungu on mission in Ghardaïa, Algeria
In the majority of our mission posts in Norther part of Africa, the legacy of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa and the Missionaries of Africa who lived the charism of our founder Cardinal Lavigerie remains alive.
In many instances, we discover their footprints and fruits of their dedicated work.
Remembering Sister Renée Guillermin: A Tribute to Her Life and Service
It is with great sorrow that we learned the news of the return to the Father of our sister Renée Guillermin, this November 26. We lived with Rénée in Ghardaïa, Algeria. She leaves us with the memory of a sister who was always approachable, generous in her self-giving. Her simplicity and joy remain a treasure for us.
Our neighbors remember her.
Rénée lived 19 years in Ghardaïa, Algeria. She taught embroidery and sewing to the girls of the Melika neighborhood who were preparing their trousseau. She knew how to conform to the requirements of the mozabites to enter this neighborhood, with a suitable dress code and a way of speaking to their daughters. They were very closely monitored there, but for her, the mission came first. Our sisters themselves respected what the men wanted to be communicated to women and girls. The Mission first. May God grant us to always refer to it before ourselves.
Legacy of Father Denys Pillet: Celebrating His Impact in Ouargla
Father Denys Pillet, Missionary of Africa lived practically his whole life in the Sahara and especially in Ouargla, Algeria.
There, he had initiated the writing of the “Ouargla notebooks,” which trace the essentials of the culture of this oasis of the Sahara and its history.
Our brothers, the Missionaries of Africa of Ouargla, invited his friends and acquaintances to celebrate the 40th day of his death. Yes, we are only initiators; our greatest happiness is to see this work of Denys Pillet continued. The people of the country continue what he had started and they find reference points for their children. A couscous then brought everyone together in memory of this great apostle.
Relaunch of the training of nursery school teachers
The training of kindergarten teachers has reopened its doors, not without difficulty, after two years of interruption. Our sisters Bernadette Djekoye and Domina Dusenge have visited several nursery schools and daycare centers to offer the training to the nursery school teachers. It is offered by the charitable services of our diocese. It facilitates better care for children from 1 to 5 years old. Sister Domina courageously and competently provides this training to twelve women, in collaboration with Zohra, a friend who is also a trainer in Laghouat. Zohra had already collaborated with our sister Danielle Lorenzoli in these trainings.
Here is another of the fruits of the lasting work that our father Cardinal Lavigerie spoke to us about.
We thank God for everything that our sisters have initiated in this city. We are reaping the fruits for our mission today.
