In Rome, on 26th of January 2019, as part of the commemorations of the Jubilee Year of our Foundation and of that of the Missionaries of Africa, Cardinal Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, presided over a Solemn Mass in the Saint Louis des Français Church where Cardinal Charles Lavigerie our founder was ordained Bishop in March 1863.

Pope Francis contributes the preface to a new book on human trafficking, entitled « Women crucified”, by Fr Aldo Buonaiuto, a priest of the Pope John XXIII Community. The shame of human trafficking as told from the street ». In the preface, Pope Francis recalls one of his Mercy Friday visits to a house run by the Pope John XXIII Community for victims of human trafficking. “I did not think I would find such humiliated, afflicted and suffering women there”, writes the Pope. “Truly, women crucified”. Pope Francis describes listening to “the moving and very human stories of these unfortunate women, some of them with their child in their arms”. Afterwards, he says he felt the need to “ask forgiveness for the real tortures they had to endure because of their clients, many of whom call themselves Christian”. Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa (White Sisters) and Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) celebrate the Jubilee of 150 years since their foundation by Cardinal Lavigerie. In different countries of the world where our sisters and brothers are present we organized celebrations to open the jubilee year.

On the occasion of the 150 years since our foundation, a special walking route and a guide have been prepared in the Netherlands to help discover the heritage of our two Institutes: the Missionaries of Africa and the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa.

On the 16th of December we gathered at the cathedral in Tunis to officially launch the 150 jubilee year celebration.

This last day before the opening celebration, we went to the Institute of the Belles Lettres Arabes created and managed by the White Fathers since 1923.

The second day of the pilgrimage took us to Thibar, a village in the mountains where the first White Fathers arrived in 1895 and the White Sisters in 1902.

The opening celebrations of the Jubilee Year began with a 3-day pilgrimage. The first item on the itinerary was both a discovery and a spiritual step in the footsteps of the ancient church of Africa, of Lavigerie and the White Fathers and White Sisters in Tunisia.

The Missionaries of Africa and the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Africa in Brussels, Belgium, opened the 150th Anniversary on December 2, 2018, surrounded by people from various denominations, countries and the parishioners of St. Michael’s Chapel, on Clovis Street.
